Slice of Yakima: TV network notes local housing market

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Yakima got national attention Tuesday on "Good Morning America," and it had nothing to do with gangs -- or hot weather.

Citing Zillow.com, the ABC show named the Yakima metropolitan area as one of the top five markets to sell a home.

The others are Fayetteville, N.C., Oklahoma City, Okla.; Boulder, Colo.; and Washington, D.C.

From the news desk of "Good Morning America" in New York City, anchor Chris Cuomo was noticeably surprised.

"Yakima, Washington. You had me on that one," he told consumer correspondent Elisabeth Leamy after she ticked off the list.

Zillow.com spokeswoman Amy Bohutinsky wasn't surprised.

Many communities have seen a decline in home values over the last five years. But 95 percent of homes in Yakima County are sold at a profit.

"No markets are out of the woods in the greater recession," said Bohutinsky, based at the real estate service's office in Seattle. "But relative to most markets in the country, Yakima is doing quite well right now."

Yakima County's property values had an average annual increase of 4.8 percent in the last five years. A home bought five years ago for $100,000, for example, would be worth about $126,400 today.
