CHINOOK PASS, Wash. -- Two Yakima-area teenagers who got lost during an afternoon hike Wednesday were reunited with family on Thursday, officials said.
The 16-year-old boys had been camping at Boy Scouts Of America at Camp Fife, near Chinook Pass, according to Sgt. Judd Towell of the Yakima County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue unit.
Authorities were called at 11 p.m. Wednesday after the boys failed to return to camp after a hike in the wilderness, Towell said. About 15 volunteers helped with the overnight search.
The boys were found Thursday on a trail several miles east of their last known location after calling a relative for help on a cell phone, authorities say.
"They did a good job of keeping themselves safe," Towell said. "And when they found a marker, they relayed the number and that allowed us to locate them."
Both were in good health and returned home about 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
"The families were very grateful," Towell added. "They're good kids. Just got a little turned around."
