TOPPENISH -- Extra patrols will be on U.S. Highway 97 between Goldendale and Toppenish this weekend in honor of a Klickitat County sheriff's sergeant who died there two years ago.
The Peter Garland Memorial Emphasis Patrol runs Friday through Sunday.
Officers from the Washington State Patrol, Klickitat and Yakima county sheriffs' offices will focus on speeding, unsafe passing and impaired driving. A drug dog and officers trained as drug-recognition experts will be part of the team.
Garland, 38, died in July 2007 when a speeding driver smashed into his car in a no-passing zone. Investigators later determined that the man had been smoking marijuana.
Garland was the on-call sergeant for the sheriff's office that weekend, so his death was considered in the line of duty.
I remember hearing about his death. Alot of people don't pay attention when they drive. Too busy with a cell phone in their ear. Thinking that they OWN the road and no safe reguard for anyone else that's on it. As if rules of the road to apply to them. R.I.P. Garland. We still remember you.
