YAKIMA, Wash. -- Yakima officials are considering relocating a cage-fighting competition now scheduled to close a one-block section of Yakima Avenue on Friday afternoon and evening.
Joe Caruso, the city’s acting code administration manager, told city department heads and council members in an e-mail today that the tournament may move from Yakima Avenue to South Fourth Street because of traffic concerns.
“Yakima Ave. experiences about 17,800 vehicles daily and to close at this time will be drastic,” the e-mail reads.
Previously, the city had granted a organizers a permit to close Yakima Avenue between Fourth and Fifth avenues.
The e-mail says the city will offer to close South Fourth Street between Yakima and Chestnut avenues for the event.
Caruso also had planned to double-check for proper liquor permits and had planned to meet with the fight promoter this morning.
The owners of Yakima Mixed Martial Arts had planned a cage-fighting competition in front of their studio at 419 W. Yakima Ave.

What a joke!!! Didn't Joe Caruso and the police department know about the 17,800 cars when they initially issued the permit?? Thats right, the city doesn't know how to communicate with each other up front, only in emails after the fact and behind closed doors. Will the city pay Yakima Mixed Martial Arts for all new advertising to let the spectators know of the change of venue??? Another waste of tax dollars.
Report ViolationThe planning of this event is like something my teenage grandkids would try to pull off.....but wait...they're just kids! Geesh!
Report ViolationFire Joe Caruso for his years of incompetence.
Report ViolationI think someone was asking before why Yakima doesn't get any big promotions in the area.
Report ViolationIt seems the City really needs an independent audit of all systems associated with operations, communications, and IT. Come on City Council - tell the City Manager to get it together - give him a deadline of two months to implement changes that create better efficiency and cost savings (for instance, online bill paying would save some money and trees). By the way, why hasn't the City started utilizing cost saving green technology - like solar power for City offices? From what I understand there are Federal monies available for these projects - and rural communities are on the top of the list. Come on Doc - do something - how about gettting some green manufacturing jobs in the Valley?
