CLE ELUM, Wash. — Ida Bakeman’s persistence finally paid and on her wedding anniversary, to boot.
The Cle Elum woman picked five of the six winning numbers in last Friday’s Mega Millions lottery game, giving her a $250,000 anniversary present, the Washington State Lottery announced.
Bakeman, who is retired, found out she had won Monday — her anniversary — when she checked her ticket.
She claimed her winnings at the Yakima lottery office on Tuesday.
Lottery officials said that for the last 14 years Bakeman played the same lottery numbers — a combination of her and her husband’s birthdays and their anniversary.
The release said the couple plans to replace their nonworking lawn mower, pay a couple of bills and show their son some more of Washington’s scenery. The son lives in Florida and was visiting when Bakeman learned she won.
She bought her ticket at the Safeway store in Cle Elum for the July 3 drawing.
Mega Millions, a multistate lottery game, pays $250,000 to winners who pick five numbers but fail to match the Mega Millions ball.
