WANAPUM, Wash. — A 20-year-old Ellensburg woman lost her lower leg after a boating accident Saturday evening on the Columbia River, Kittitas County sheriff’s deputies said.
Alison McWeeny was among seven occupants of the water-skiing boat who were ejected while the boat was turning to pick up the skier across from Wanapum State Park.
McWeeney, who was sitting in the open bow, went under the boat, causing extensive leg trauma. She was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where doctors were unable to save the lower leg, Undersheriff Clayton Myers said in a news release.
She was rescued by a civilian boater. The other occupants were not hurt.
Witnesses and occupants said the boat rolled over while turning around. The craft apparently took on water over the bow while turning in the wake and then nosedived under the water upon hitting a second wave.
McWeeney and two others in the bow were not wearing life jackets, an occupant told the sheriff’s office.
Marine deputies were continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
