Free luau slated for Sunday

A couple of churches are hosting a luau in Yakima's Franklin Park on Sunday afternoon.

Breakthrough Christian Center and Yakima Christian Center are inviting the community to a free, luau-themed barbecue.

The event gets under way at 9:30 a.m. and continues until 3:30 p.m. It features food, games, live music and children's activities.

And a block party, too

It's party time.

West Valley Church of the Nazarene is hosting its annual block party Sunday night -- and everyone's invited.

The family-friendly event includes food, games and music. The party starts at 5 p.m. on the church grounds, 7109 W. Nob Hill Blvd.

Churches announce VBS plans

A few more churches have announced their summer Vacation Bible School lineups.

* Yakima's Wesley United Methodist Church will be holding its session from 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 19-23. Programming begins at 6:30 p.m. A light dinner will be served before activities start.

This year's theme is "Rome: Paul and the Underground Church." Families are encouraged to attend the sessions together.

* Zillah's Faith Community Church will be hosting its VBS from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m., beginning Monday. The session runs through Friday. Children ages 4 through sixth grade are invited to attend. This year's theme is "Wildwood Forest: Discover the Untamed Nature of God."

* Lutherhaven Ministries is running a VBS session from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., beginning Monday. The session runs through Friday at Yakima's Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 7809 Tieton Drive.

Children in kindergarten through sixth grade are welcome to attend. The weeklong day camp includes arts and crafts, games, singing, puppet shows, Bible stories and more.

* The Cross Church in Yakima is offering its VBS from 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 12 to 17. The program is open to children age 4 through sixth grade.

This year's theme is "Boomerang Express: It All Comes Back to Jesus." Activities include music, videos, Bible stories, crafts, games and snacks.

Rides are available. Call the church office before 3 p.m. for pick-up on the daily bus route. Friday night is "Family Night." Parents are invited to join their children at VBS.

A preregistration event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with hot dogs, an inflatable jumper and beverages.

* Sun Valley Church is running its VBS from 9 to 11:30 a.m. July 13-16 at Moxee Elementary School, 408 E. Seattle Ave.

Free sing is Sunday night

Cowiche Community Church is hosting a "First Sunday Night Sing" on Sunday night.

The free event starts at 6:30 p.m. at the church, 981 Elliott Road. It will feature John Fisk as the main singer as well as several members of the congregation. There will also be accordion music.

YCC to host pastor pair

Yakima Christian Center is hosting a special night of praise and worship featuring Steve and Wendy Backlund.

According to their Web site at www.ignitedhope.com, the Backlunds were senior pastors for 17 years before joining the team at Bethel Church in Redding, Calif., in 2008. They've written books together, including "Igniting Faith in 40 Days." Steve Backlund has also penned several books on his own.

This will be the couple's first time ministering in the Yakima Valley, according to Yakima Christian Center pastors Ron and Jana Torres. The Backlunds -- authors, revivalists, teachers and church strategists -- will be speaking about leadership, healthy relationships, vision and faith.

Worship music will be led by Preston Jones of Yakima and his team.

Service theme tied to holiday

The Bible Baptist Church of Selah will present a special arrangement of patriotic music during Sunday morning's worship service.

The service begins at 11 a.m. In addition to patriotic songs, the pastor will give a patriotic message in honor of the Fourth of July weekend.

Summer Family Festival nears

Yakima's Holy Redeemer Parish celebrates summer next Saturday with its Summer Family Festival.

There will be games -- such as bingo and a cakewalk -- prizes, face-painting, music, entertainment, and Mexican and American food.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the church, 1707 S. Third Ave. For more information, call 509-248-2241.

 

Taizé service coming Sunday

St. Michael's Episcopal Church will host a Taizé service Sunday night.

The service, which features music and meditative singing, begins at 7 p.m. A rehearsal starts an hour earlier.

Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments and accompany the singing. Youth and young adults are especially invited to attend.

The Taizé Community was founded by Brother Roger in Taizé, France, in 1940. Today, it's made up of more than 100 brothers from more than 25 countries and serves as a symbol of reconciliation between divided Christians and other separated peoples.
