Extra troopers will patrol highways during weekend

Yakima Herald-Republic

Two dozen extra troopers will be patrolling state roads between Yakima, Walla Walla and the Tri-Cities over the extended holiday weekend.

The Washington State Patrol says troopers will pay special attention to violations that are most commonly linked to fatality and injury collisions within the region, such as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, dangerous speeding and failure to use seat belts and child restraints.

Aggressively driven commercial vehicles will also be under scrutiny as extra officers will be on duty to conduct inspections.

"We are asking everyone to celebrate responsibly this holiday weekend," District Commander Shawn Berry said in a news release.

The additional patrols include Yakima (five), Sunnyside (one), Tri-Cities (four) and Walla Walla (two).
