YAKIMA, Wash. -- The former treasurer of the Highland Music Boosters was sentenced Wednesday to 90 days in jail for stealing thousands of dollars intended to pay for the Highland High School band's spring trip.
Klystie Journagan, 47, pleaded guilty to first-degree theft and was ordered to pay about $5,600 in restitution. She had already paid $7,000 of the estimated $12,000 she took, booster club officers said.
Journagan was treasurer of the booster group in 2007 and 2008.
About 30 Highland students in eighth through 12th grades, plus about 10 adults, were planning a spring break trip to San Francisco, where the band was to perform on the USS Hornet, a decommissioned aircraft carrier converted to a museum.
The trip had to be canceled after club president Tina Wisnowski discovered during the holiday break in December that there was not enough money in the booster group's bank account to cover a $10,000 down payment due for the trip.
Journagan's son was a member of the band.
90 days isn't nearly enough to make the proper impression for this despicable action. When will our liberal judges stop rewarding criminals with light - or no - sentences?
