Woman gets prison time for crash in which daughter died

Yakima Herald-Republic

YAKIMA, Wash. -- A woman charged as a result of a 2008 car crash in which her 3-year-old daughter died has been sentenced to prison.

Nicole Estrada of Grandview pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide Thursday in Yakima County Superior Court.

Judge Ruth Reukauf sentenced her to 15 months in prison, the low end of the standard range.

Estrada, who was 19 at the time of the Jan. 20, 2008, accident, drove her Nissan Sentra through a stop sign at the intersection of Maple Grove and Outlook roads, west of Sunnyside.

A Dodge Dakota pickup traveling west on Outlook Road struck Estrada’s car on the passenger side.

The child, Sophia Rivera, was not restrained and was thrown from the vehicle when it crashed.
