YAKIMA, Wash. -- Yakima Valley's Windy Point Vineyards won two of the top awards during the 2009 Washington State Wine Competition announced last weekend.
The 28th annual competition at State Fair Park in Yakima attracted 405 wines from 94 wineries in the state.
More than 400 people attended the award announcement, which was sponsored by the Sunshine and Wine Committee. The event helped raise funds to renovate State Fair Park's historic buildings and provide scholarships for the Yakima Valley Community College enological program.
Top award winners were:
* Walter Clore Award -- Best Chardonnay: Hoodsport Winery 2007 Chardonnay
* Ruth Anglin Award -- Best Syrah: Thurston Wolfe Winery 2007 Syrah
* Stan Clarke Award -- Best Cabernet: Barnard Griffin 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon
* Andy Markin Award -- Best Merlot: Tasawik Vineyards 2005 Merlot
* Governor's Award -- Best White: Naches Heights Vineyards 2008 Pinot Gris
* Governor's Award -- Best Red: Windy Point Vineyards 2006
* Best of Show: Windy Point Vineyards 2006
