YAKIMA, Wash. -- A casual memorial reception for well-known local gardener Barney Smith will be held Sunday at the Yakima Area Arboretum.

Smith died March 28 at the age of 92. He would have turned 93 this weekend.

Smith wrote the column "Barney Smith: In the Garden" for the Yakima Herald-Republic every week for more than 33 years. He was a member of the Garden Writers Association of America, a past president of the Washington Pesticide Consultants Association and a longtime member of the arboretum board of directors.

Attendees are invited to bring flowers or vegetables from their gardens for a display then take them home after the gathering. Donations can be made to the arboretum in support of gardening education. The celebration will be 1-3 p.m.

For more information, call the arboretum at 509-248-7337.
