Sandwich battle headed for downtown Yakima?

YAKIMA, Wash. -- The word on the street is that that Subway will be opening a new location at the the Hawkes & Sons building on the corner of Second Street and Yakma Avenue, which is being remodeled by its new owner.

That is just a few spots down from the Sub Shop, the local sandwich shop chain co-owned by former Yakima City Council member Ron Bonlender.

If the chatter is true, that will probably be a disappointment for Shop Talk readers who were hoping for something new to come to downtown Yakima.

I’ve been trying to reach some folks to confirm this, but haven’t gotten much word. I will give an update.

Bummer! A subway...is it really that hard to find something a little more exciting to bring to Yakima?

Franchises usually do a good market analysis prior to approving a new store. I'm betting Bonlender's negative "good will" was a factor in looking at the competition around that location.

It will be interesting to see which survives - the local small businessman about whom people are polarized or the chain.

Sandy deserves no less. FYI- Subway is a franchise with a local owner, just like Sub Shop.

Ouch that sucks big time, why can't Yakima get something new that people actually want?? There are already 9 Subways in the Yakima area. They could have at least built a Carl's Jr. or Popeye Chicken if it was just gonna be a fast food joint.

LOL, I called it! Not that I actually wanted to be right about this :-(

Kennewick get's everything(PF Changs, etc), and Yakima once again looks pathetic in it's shadow. I bet they'll get a Nordstrom soon too, just to twist the knife in a little more.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the mayor and city council a big part of recruiting new businesses/national chains/retailers to the city of Yakima as well? Doesn't seem like they are trying too hard. It shouldn't be that hard to bring in big name restaurants to this market, Yakima really isn't as small as people like to make it out to be. People here really need to stop thinking that way, this is a pretty large area, with a good sized population.

The Tri-Cities is three times larger than Yakima (240,000 vs. 80,000), not even taking into account the nearby surrounding smaller towns. Quite a difference in potential market for an entrepreneur or business owner to consider.

I know the tri-cities is bigger(duh), but still Yakima should be able to get the kinds of restaurants/retailers that Kennewick does.

I agree jk2040, Yakima easily has over 100,000 people if you include UG, Moxee, Selah, WV and Terrace Hts. Yakima is not a small area, we should be able to pull in some large size retail/eating establishments to our area. I blame it on our high poverty rate in the county why business choose Tri-Cities over good ole Yak-Town.

Good, Ron Bonlender will have some competition now. Maybe now @#$% have less time to file frivolous lawsuits at the taxpayers' expense.

lets quit the attacks on ron bonlender and focus on what is important people. what does it take to get a DIFFRENT chain restraunt to notice yakima. Or what does it take form the current council or buisness owners of yakima to bring in new restraunts. I dont care what demographic garbage says, people in yakima enjoy diffrent restraunts and desire a diversity and WILL spend for it. Please anyone out there, bring new exciting restaunts to yakima.

It's all about money. Yakima doesn't have any. Tri Cities has a large middle class.

It is about the money, but more about the demographics. I can say with all enthusiasm that there are many national chains, both restaurants and other retailers, eyeing the Yakima Valley. With that being said, our demographics attract a broad segment of retailers, but exclude others; such as Whole Foods. We can WANT a WF all day long, but without 250,000 people within a 3-mile radius with a diverse ethnicity, we simply won't get one. However, Winco, Costco, Walmart, Best Buy, Forever 21, JC Penney, etc.....welcome us with open arms. It's all about the demographics!

As for Bonlender and the Sub Shop, we wish him and his cavalier attitude the best of luck. Neither INBD or the Landlord wishes to put anyone out. And if his sales do suffer as a result of a national marketing plan, operations and efficiency experts, co-op advertising dollars, better positioning/location, and a trusted brand name, then the fact that he is the owner of the building he is in may usher a new restaurant with Ron as a Landlord, so that he may spend more time politicing. We love ya Ron!
