Festival of flowers ends two-day run today
The fifth annual Festival of Flowers takes place in Yakima this weekend.
The two-day flower fest, sponsored by Banner Bank, started Friday and continues today. It features antiques, art, garden décor and plants, children's activities and a variety of food vendors.
This year's event benefits children's programs at Catholic Family & Child Service, including the Carroll Children's Center, Child Care Resource & Referral, Valley Intervention Program and Parents as Teachers.
Catholic Family & Child Service operates a network of nine offices throughout Central Washington and serves more than 37,000 people each year. Programs include adoption, senior and specialized mental health services.
The Festival of Flowers is on the grounds at Holy Family Church, 5301 Tieton Drive. Admission is $5. Children under 12 get in free. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.
Toppenish Calvary Bible Church plans day camps
Toppenish Calvary Bible Church will host two day camps this week.
Camps take place Tuesday in Pioneer Park and Thursday in Olney Park. Running times are 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Lunch will be served at noon.
The day camps feature songs, games, crafts, skits and stories. The theme for both camps is "In the Beginning, God Created ... "
At the end of the week, the church will host a barbecue dinner for all the children involved in the day camps as well as their families. The barbecue starts at 6:30 p.m. Friday. It features a short program, including some of the songs and stories from the camps.

Drum circle is today
Yakima's Unity Spiritual Life Center is hosting a drum circle this afternoon.
A freestyle drumming circle is from 1 to 3 p.m. at the church, 401 S. Eighth Ave. Drop-ins are welcome, and extra drums are available if you don't have one.

Liberty Quartet sets concert
The Liberty Quartet, a traditional Southern Gospel group, will give a free concert in Yakima on June 27.
The Boise, Idaho-based group keeps a full-time schedule, giving about 200 performances -- and traveling up to 70,000 miles -- each year.
Members are: Royce Mitchell, bass; Dan Gilbert, lead; Doran Ritchey, baritone and piano; and Keith Waggoner, tenor.

Discovery Canyon VBS starts Sunday
Yakima's Christ Lutheran Church will host Discovery Canyon Vacation Bible School Sunday through Thursday.
Children in preschool through sixth grade are welcome to attend the free session, which runs from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Dinner will be served each night. The session also features games, music, skits, Bible stories and crafts.

Retired reverend speaks on Sunday
Retired Rev. Betty Distler will be the featured guest speaker at Yakima's Wesley United Methodist Church on Sunday morning.
Distler will speak during the 9 a.m. worship service, which will be followed by a pancake brunch, hosted by the church Men's Group.
Everyone's invited to the service and Father's Day fellowship event. Proceeds from the brunch will help fund a boys' orphanage in Africa.

Mission helps feed White Swan kids
The Yakama Christian Mission will offer a summer feeding program for children in the White Swan area.
Through the mission's Simplified Summer Food Program, meals will be available for people 18 and under.
The program began Monday, and runs weekdays through Aug. 7. There will be no food service July 3.
A snack is served from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Lunch is served from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Meals are served at the mission, 2551 Signal Peak Road in White Swan. The site supervisor is Katherine Bell.

Wesley United delves into 'The Shack'
The adult study group at Yakima's Wesley United Methodist Church is beginning a new book, and everyone's welcome to join in.
"The Shack," a Christian paperback novel set in Oregon, focuses on Mack, a character who's overtaken by "The Great Sadness" after the abduction of his youngest daughter, Missy. He receives a letter inviting him back to the scene of the crime, a shack in the wilderness of Eastern Oregon. The letter is signed, "Papa," Mack's wife's name for God.
At the shack, Mack's greeted by The Father, who appears as a gregarious black woman; The Son, a Jewish, Middle-Eastern-looking workman; and The Holy Spirit, a luminous woman with Asian features. And he gets to truly know God.
The study group, called "AHA," invites community to read the 200-plus page book with them. The group meets at 10 a.m. Sunday, following the 9 a.m. worship service, and is led by Jerry Copeland.

Outdoor services begin Monday
A series of open-air, afternoon services will begin Monday in Yakima.
Meetings take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday on Naches Avenue between East Chestnut and East Walnut streets. Meetings conclude July 3.

Daughters of the Americas grows
The local court of The Catholic Daughters of the Americas welcomes four new members.
Court Caruana No. 906 in Yakima recently installed Charlene Lnenicka, Francesca Lenz, Elizabeth Taylor and Cynthia Dees.
The women were honored during Mass at Holy Redeemer Church, followed by a buffet breakfast at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center.
The Catholic Daughters of the Americas is a women's service organization that raises money for local, national and international charities. Yakima's chapter has about 80 members. Nationwide, there are about 82,000 members.

Presbyterian church honors members
Parker Heights Presbyterian Church is celebrating the 75th wedding anniversary of longtime members Bill and Hazel Silvers on Sunday, and everyone's welcome.
The Rev. Nicholas D. Valadez, pastor at Parker Heights Presbyterian, will give the couple -- both in their 90s -- a special blessing as part of Sunday's 10:30 a.m. worship service.
A reception in honor of the couple will be held immediately following the service. The congregation will be giving the couple a "card shower," featuring greeting cards instead of gifts.
