YAKIMA, Wash. — A proposal keeping radio personality Dave Ettl on air while he runs for a Yakima City Council seat is being mulled over by at least one of his opponents.
A second opponent, however, said she's definitely not interested.
Incumbent Councilwoman Sonia Rodriguez said she wants a deal giving her air time on other stations owned by GAP West, the parent company of KIT-AM, where Ettl co-hosts a popular morning talk show.
But candidate Sharon Madson says she wants nothing less than equal time.
Under federal law, radio and television stations are required to offer candidates running for office equal air time.
Rodriguez met with station manager David Roederer on Wednesday to discuss options other than equal time.
"I told him I'd think about the options he gave me," she said, noting that she would give him an answer Friday.
Roederer didn't return phone calls Wednesday seeking comment.
However, Ettl said the station can't afford to give candidates the same time he spends on the air.
Rodriguez said options outlined by the station include a daily hourlong show on KIT or some other package that included campaign advertising.
But she said she'd be more interested in air time on some of GAP West's five other Yakima Valley stations. She said she might have a friendlier reception from other audiences than she'd get at KIT because of Ettl's employment at the station.
Madson, however, said she didn't meet with Roederer.
"I'm not in negotiation to work around (Ettl) to keep him on the air, so there was no reason for me to be there," she said.
"I want him off the air," she said, adding that Ettl initially said he'd campaign on name recognition.
She said she's not interested in anything short of equal time and plans to meet with Roederer next week.
The primary election is Aug. 18 and the general election is Nov. 3.
"I'm just thinking if he's off the air, I don't have to keep track of how much time he is on the air," she said.
Ettl, whose career in both television and radio spans about 25 years in the Yakima Valley, said he doesn't plan to talk politics while on the job.
"The exchange is that I'm not talking politics," he said. "And if I do, then they can weigh in. I don't need this current radio venue to get my message out. I'm going to doorbell, I'll find a way to get my message out."

She just lost MY vote. Too much of a hard-head and likely not receptive to opposing points of view if she got elected. More the "dictator" style of leadership.
Nick - so you won't vote for her because she wants him to honor his pledge to not be on the radio during the campaign, but he's still in the running after breaking that pledge? Personally, I'll stick with those candidates that have a sense of ethics as opposed to those that say one thing and do something else.
Report ViolationI think KIT should call their bluff. These liberal politicians don't actually want to go on a radio station with conservative listeners. They just want to silence Dave Ettl. Let's hear these liberals pitch their tax and spend policies to KIT's listeners.
Report ViolationNick - so you won't vote for her because she wants him to honor his pledge to not be on the radio during the campaign, ***Hey Nick, I didn't pledge to NOT BE ON AIR.
I have a job to do on behalf of my co-workers, our advertisers and the listeners...I pledged to NOT be a stereotypical politician with countless yard signs, tv ads, mailers and negative campaigning. My management is trying to package a more effective arangement of time and opportunity for her campaign. If she thinks it works for her -great, if not, I will have to come off air...but she should at least hear us out. Sonja did and found a fair and reasonable proposition.
---but he's still in the running after breaking that pledge? ***Again, no such pledge was made...no pledge was broken.
Personally, I'll stick with those candidates that have a sense of ethics as opposed to those that say one thing and do something else.***I think thats an excellent idea, and so far you have three such candidates in this race...good luck with your decision, please base it on the facts.
Dave,
You replied to the wrong commenter, but I'm sure YakRob knows who you were talking to. YakRob often gets his facts wrong, so people will definitely take your word over his.
Dave, I was quoting the article. That was not my personal comment.
Report ViolationMy apologies Nick, as sjuan pointed out, I meant to direct my comment to YakRob. Sorry for the confusion.
Report ViolationLet her speak and get her 15 minutes of shame. After the election Sonia and Mr. praise the lord will be out of here anyway. Then they can save the church from being exposed to butt cleavage and help the poor illegal immangrants from being picked on by the mean old americans. OOPS I MEANT WHITE PEOPLE.

"I pledged to NOT be a stereotypical politician with countless yard signs, tv ads, mailers and negative campaigning.
You have no idea how far this will get you if this pledge is honored! I'm serious... folks are fed up with the political B.S. and just want someone to "Say what they mean, and mean what they say". Man...we still haven't recovered from the last 2 years of crap that went down
P-L-E-A-S-E...take the high road!
Dave - I did misunderstand the reporting of your statement regarding radio time during the campaign - my interpretation was incorrect, and I apologize for that. Good luck with the campaign.
Report ViolationDo these candidates not realize or care that these types of comments help us build our image and opinions of who they are, what they stand for and how they will affect our lives? I am tired of the hard lefts and hard rights who are unwilling to listen or compromise with each other. They follow and support their candidate or party unconditionally without question or concern with what is good for the majority. This kind of blind following erodes the accountability a politician should have to all of us. Without level headed analysis, sprinkled with common sense, compromise and decency, we have what we see all too often in politics today: politicians promoting and supporting their own personal or political agenda or corruption from lack of limits or accountability for poor behavior.
Madsen who stated that she wants nothing less than equal time, comes off as totally uncompromising, unwilling to bend and as if she is owed something for nothing.
Rodriguez, by appearance comes off slightly better, as if she is compromising but states that she is more interested in air time on some of GAP West
