YAKIMA, Wash. -- Westbound traffic on West Washington Avenue at Third Avenue is being detoured while police investigate a bicycle-vehicle accident that sent a 37-year-old man to a Yakima hospital in critical condition, Yakima police said.
Eastbound traffic is flowing as of 3:45 p.m.
The accident occurred about 1:15 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Washington Avenue, just west of the intersection with Third Avenue.
Police said the man, riding a bicycle, attempted to cross Washington Avenue outside of the crosswalk.
The bicycle struck an eastbound delivery vehicle that was moving into the turn lane.
The bicyclist was taken to Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center.

Was he wearing a helmet? The Seattle Times always list this info.
It will be interesting to know if the cyclist was riding lawfully. I use my cycle instead of a car about half of the time and I'm nearly hit every time by inattentive drivers. Although Yakima is not a bike friendly town there are also a lot of people riding bike's recklessly. Car drivers need to remember that bikes share all the same rights and privileges as cars. Slowing down and moving your car over is a lot easier than causing serious injury to a cyclist no matter who's right or wrong.
Lobo...you are correct on the rights however, I have encountered many people of ALL ages riding bikes recklessly. The other day was a classic case of I was sitting at a stop sign..looked all directions and went to pull out and some 20 yr old guy zinged out from the shrubs and hit me! He was on the sidewalk. Cyclists have a tendency to think they are completely safe when they are on bikes.
Report ViolationI ride through that intersection on my bike frequently. That is the worst place. I don't know why they mention that the guy was outside of the cross walk though. He isn't supposed to be inside the crosswalk unless he is walking with the bike.
