SELAH — A Wednesday evening fire blamed on fireworks was expected to keep firefighters busy through early today after it started on Lookout Point.

Dozens of firefighters from Union Gap to the Nile were called to fight the blaze, which spread east for about a mile from its starting point at Dwinell Drive and Lookout Point Drive above Selah. They kept the flames from nearing any homes.

Selah fire Chief Jerry Davis said two boys on Dwinnell Drive were playing with fireworks on the paved cul de sac when sparks started the fire in adjacent brush.

The fire stayed on the south side of the ridge, but crews had to work through gullies and hills.

A state or Forest Service hand crew may arrive this morning to finish attacking the last of the fire, if needed.

The size of the fire could not immediately be confirmed, but Davis estimated it at over 100 acres.
