Yakima schools bond issue still winning

YAKIMA -- The more things change, the more they stay the same.

That's true of the Yakima School District bond election. Results show that the bond is still enjoying a 68.6 percent approval rate.

Officials in the Yakima County Auditors Office counted another 1,234 ballots which came in the mail after Tuesday's election and found that yes votes were holding steady.

Although the election won't be officially certified until June 3, the margin of victory most likely won't be affected by any outstanding ballots, said Diana Soules, assistant auditor.

Less than 43 percent of eligible voters sent in ballots on the district's $114 million bond proposal. Thus far, all 11,862 votes cast have been counted, and only a few more ballots are expected to come in the mail.

The 20-year bond will replace Eisenhower High School, modernize Davis High School and renovate six other schools.

The state will match with $104 million.

In July, plans will begin for designing the new Eisenhower campus.
