TOPPENISH, Wash. -- A local veterans group is seeking cell phones to connect servicemen overseas with their family at home.

Veterans & Family Memorial Care Provider for Yakima County aims to put cell phones in the hands of servicemen abroad under the Cell Phone for Soldiers program.

People can donate used cell phones at Colonial Funeral Home at 228 S. Alder St. in Toppenish from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

More than 150,000 troops are serving overseas, and cell phones give them a chance to talk to their families at home.

The donated phones are sent to the electronics firm ReCellular, which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each phone, enough to provide an hour of talk time to soldiers abroad.
