YAKIMA, Wash. -- A gang-related shooting has become the 10th homicide this year in Yakima County.
Leonardo A. Perez, 20, died Tuesday morning from his injuries after being shot late Monday during a confrontation in northeast Yakima, police said.
Police said Perez, who was shot once in the chest, was a known gang member who lived in Yakima.
The incident began when officers responded to a report of a fight about 10:30 p.m. Monday in the 1000 block of North Naches Avenue. The shooting reportedly took place a block away in the 1000 block of North Fourth Street.
Officers stopped a vehicle that was leaving the scene at high speed and found a gun in the car. The male driver was taken into custody on a gun-related charge. The incident may not be related to Monday night’s shooting, police said.
Yakima County’s homicide rate may eclipse what was seen last year. As of May 2008, there were seven homicides in the county and 18 total for the year.
The Perez homicide investigation is continuing, and anyone with information should call Yakima police at 509-575-6200.

Maybe a sign for the city council that there is bigger problems in yakima than the scanty coffe shops.
I am tired of this stupidity like everyone else but to say that they are SUB-HUMAN is flat out wrong. This is a social problem that plagues every culture and society, rural or urban and is not just limited to yakima. Get real man its been happening for decades and will continue to happen until we as a society decide to really tackle the problem from the root, and I am not talking about just little old yakima. THis is a world wide problem. cuased by lack of eduaction and poverty amonst other factors.
I'll stand up for the sub-human comment. Anyone over the age of 10 should know right vs wrong. Carrying a gun with intent to do harm is cut and dry. One of these days another innocent person will be targeted or caught in the crossfire. Remember the guy in the WSU sweatshirt executed at a stop sign downtown?

Regardless of who these young kids are....they ARE human beings! They are where they are because they everyone gave up on them and never gave them encouragement while growing up. Just read the threatening comment from NORTENO21VCV and get a slight drift of what I have been talking about. Now THAT is an offensive and dangerous comment that I'm glad wasn't censored out by the moderator, because it gives those of you who have no idea of what you speak, a little peak into the lives and minds of our local bangsters. They are criminals and should not be given any kind of pass - I don't care where they come from, nor do I believe that they deserve our sympathy just because they might be minorities or immigrants. Nick, I agree. Reading NORTENO21VCV really gives you an insight of what these little knuckle heads are up to. Do you notice how they cross out the "S" with a "$" that supposed to symbolize the opponents gang "Surenos," and they try not to use the "S" as much as possible. But I really wish there was a way to exterminate all gangs in the U.S. Not just minority/immigrant gangs, but every single one, all the way to the biker gangs, and I'm pretty sure people know what I'm talking about.
I just wish one day our Criminal Justice System can come down hard on these bangers. We need these good for nothing waste of society out of our streets.

The whole gang issue is just ridiculous. Although i do feel bad for this man's family it's simply the result of choosing that stupid lifestyle. They think they are invincible but they aren't. I for one am sick and tired of all the tagging and crap that comes with this stuff. Had the sent these kids to a boot camp years ago when all this stuff started to get bad instead of the juvenille jail maybe it wouldn't have got this out of hand. I have watched firstand the police not doing their job with this ..they simply go right by them causing problems. We simply need to take our town back and ship all this so called bad a.. gang members to a boot camp.

Boot camp does sound like the best answer - BUT - As a society we have let the government in the door, to tell us how to raise our children. Spank a child in a store, and Child Protective Services takes your child from your and places him/her in a foster home. If you spank your child and they turn around and call 9-1-1 or tell their school councilor, you are in jail, they are in a foster home. This has taught them that there are NO consequences for what they do. If the parents can not control them, what are they to do? These children want what they think they need, and are so ignorant, they do not understand that they are ignorant. Knowyourstuff has it correct, your friend died for nothing.

We're the ones paying the taxes for those streets, homes, businesses, etc. Sidewalks to walk on, houses to live in and businesses to run this town. How do you contribute? When I first read NORTENO21VCV comment, I got a shiver of fright, but then very quickly went from that feeling to one of... "Oh no you don't...don't you e-v-e-n think about warning me where I should go and not go"! As a rule I "DO" stay away from the East side of town and try very hard to keep a safe distance between myself and parts of town where these gang bangers hang... but...I also know there is always a chance I will be at the wrong place at the wrong time and may very well have to protect myself. So....to you "NORTENO21VCV" and any of your buddies that may be reading this... take heed...you arn't the only ones packin! If it ever comes down to me or you going down...you better make sure you shoot straight and quick, because I promise you...I will.
