Country singer concert set
YAKIMA -- Christian country singer Dennis Agajanian will be giving a free concert Sunday night.
Agajanian, a featured performer with the Franklin Graham Fesitvals and Harvest Crusades, has been performing Christian music since 1967. He's performed with Johnny Cash, Ricky Skaggs, Tanya Tucker, Bill and Gloria Gather, and Michael W. Smith, among others.
He's also been named "Musician of the Year" and "Entertainer of the Year" several times by the Christian Country Music Association.

Outdoor service is Sunday
SELAH -- Harvest Community Church is hosting a special outdoor worship service as part of this weekend's Selah Community Days.
The service takes place at 2:30 p.m. Sunday on the main stage at Wixson Park. The service includes music, testimonies and a short message.

Child evangelism banquet set
YAKIMA -- Child Evangelism Fellowship of Yakima is holding its annual spring banquet Tuesday night.
Child Evangelism Fellowship is a worldwide organization of born-again believers aimed at evangelizing boys and girls. The organization has more than 1,200 overseas missionaries in more than 150 countries. It was founded in 1937.
The Yakima banquet is at 6:30 p.m. at Riverside Christian School, 721 Keys Road. To reserve a spot, call Ed Cavallo or Judy Foster at 509-965-3619.
VBS lineup to be previewed
YAKIMA -- Wesley United Methodist Church is hosting a meeting to showcase its vacation Bible school lineup.
The meeting is Sunday, immediately following the 9 a.m. worship service. The meeting is slated to start about 10:10 a.m. in the Gold Room of the church.
Volunteers are still needed to help run the summer program, which will be July 19-23 from 6-8:30 p.m.

School celebrates 30 years
SUNNYSIDE -- Calvary Lutheran School is celebrating its 30th anniversary -- and everyone's invited.
A worship service takes place at 11 a.m. Sunday at Calvary Lutheran Church, 804 S. 11th St.
A reunion reception to honor alumni, teachers and staff follows at 12:30 p.m.

Church turns 50 next week
NACHES -- St. John's Catholic Church is celebrating its 50th anniversary next Sunday.
The Most. Rev. Bishop Carlos Sevilla will celebrate a special Mass at 1 p.m. Lunch will follow. The regular 9 a.m. Mass will be canceled due to the celebration.
The parish was established in 1959. It's located at 206 Moxee Ave.

Local woman honored
Catherine Barthel was recently named Catholic Daughter of the Year by the local chapter of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
Barthel, 87, has been a member of the Catholic Daughters for 34 years. She's a member of St. Paul Cathedral Parish, where she serves as a eucharistic minister. She also takes communion to homebound parishioners.
At meetings of the local Catholic Daughters Court Caruana 906, Barthel frequently bakes and serves refreshments. She has also chaired several committees for the group, one of the oldest and largest organizations for Catholic women in the Americas.
Fundraiser will benefit kids
The United Methodist Pacific Northwest Conference is holding a fundraiser for underprivileged children of Africa.
Old soup cans were distributed among the congregations in the conference to fill up with money to support the drive. The label on each can says: "AFRI-CAN."
The cans are to be returned May 31. Offerings will go to help build an orphanage for boys in the Congo.
Local churches in the conference are Wesley United Methodist Church in Yakima, Westpark United Methodist in Yakima, Wilbur United Methodist in White Swan, Highland United Methodist in Tieton, Toppenish United Methodist, Sunnyside United Methodist, Selah United Methodist, Prosser United Methodist, Mabton United Methodist and Ellensburg United Methodist.
Fifty years of service feted
Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Caruana 906 recently honored Stella Vay Gilligan for her 50 years of membership and service.
Gilligan has held many offices in the local court, or chapter. She has also chaired several committees for the group, whose motto is "Unity and Charity."
Catholic Daughters, founded in 1903, has 95,000 members in more than 1,400 courts in 45 states as well as Puerto Rico, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Guam and the Virgin Islands.
Two named to group posts
YAKIMA -- Two local members of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas were recently elected to offices for the statewide organization.
Rose Marie Ulmer was elected state secretary. Thereasa Trujillo was elected state chairwoman of the nominating committee. Both are members of Yakima's Court Caruana 906.
They traveled to the state convention in Everett with a contingent of other local members. They are Karen Walker, Katy Pitzer, Donna Boyle and Margaret Wetch.
The Yakima court was also honored for the program the group developed to promote abstinence until marriage.
