* In celebration of National Historic Preservation Month, members of the Yakima Historic Preservation Commission and others will give free guided tours of the A.E. Larson Building from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.
During the tour, visitors will learn about the Art Deco building's construction and history, and will take in the vistas from the 11-story structure at the corner of Second Street and Yakima Avenue.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Larson Building was designed by architect John H. Maloney for early Yakima developer A.E. Larson, who began construction on the future Yakima Avenue landmark in the midst of the Great Depression in an effort to help the city. It was completed in the summer of 1931 and opened to the public that September.
After today's tours, local historian Yvonne Wilbur will introduce a movie made in the 1930s about the Larson family and Larson Building. The talk and film screening is at 6:30 p.m. at the Donald House (home of the Woman's Century Club), 302 N. Second St. Admission is free.
Then, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, the Yakima Historic Preservation Commission and the city of Yakima will sponsor a free preservation workshop at the Depot Restaurant, 32 N. Front St. Local experts will share their knowledge on how to preserve, repair, restore or list property on the Yakima Register of Historic Places.
For more information, call Nancy Kenmotsu at 509-833-8460.
Sunday, May 17
* Fans of the art of miniature trees known as bonsai can check out the Yakima Valley Bonsai Society's annual bonsai exhibit from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Yakima Area Arboretum, 1401 Arboretum Drive.
The exhibit will feature artistically designed alpine firs, larches, yews and maple trees. There will be trees in training, live demonstrations, stone exhibits, trees for sale, a tree raffle -- and you can vote for your favorite tree. Admission is free.
For more information, call Paula Moon with the Yakima Valley Bonsai Society at 509-966-5378, or the arboretum at 509-248-7337.
* Once again, Tieton will play host to the Connecting Communities Fiesta, the signature annual fundraising event for Yakima Interfaith Coalition La Casa Hogar.
The benefit fiesta is from 3:30-7 p.m. Sunday at the Mighty Tieton Warehouse, 608 Wisconsin Ave. in Tieton, and includes Mexican food, entertainment, raffles and a silent auction with many art pieces by local artists as well as items from Mexico.
Cost is $50 per person. All proceeds benefit La Casa Hogar, a nonprofit organization that offers classes, programs and financial assistance for immigrant women and children as they make the transition to life in the Yakima Valley.
For ticket availability -- the event usually sells out -- or more information, call La Casa Hogar at 509-457-5058.
* Joseph Brooks (clarinet), Timothy Betts (viola) and Anne Schilperoort (piano) team up to present "Once Upon A Time -- Stories in Music" at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at The Seasons, 101 N. Naches Ave.
During the concert, the trio, along with narrator Ron Grey, will perform musical fairy tales, fables and romances by composers such as Robert Schumann and Max Bruce.
