Learn how to be prepared
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is hosting a free Community Emergency Preparedness Fair today.
Anyone interested in learning about preparing for an emergency is invited to attend the event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 705 S. 38th Ave. in Yakima.
Organizations -- including the American Red Cross, Yakima Fire Department and Yakima Valley Emergency Management -- will present information. There will be more than 30 displays and demonstrations in all.
Topics include food storage, power alternatives, water sanitation methods, alternative cooking methods, dry pack canning, 72-hour kits, 4 x4 gardens and more.
Eat pizza, help the homeless
Going out for pizza Tuesday night will help feed the local homeless community.
Abby's Legendary Pizza is hosting a benefit for "Friday Night Live," a program of New Hope Community Church of the Nazarene which helps feed the homeless and hungry every Friday night. Meals are served from 4 to 6 p.m. on Naches Avenue between East Chestnut and East Walnut streets.
The program, which started last fall, offers free, hot dinners to people in need. Church and community volunteers serve soup, salad, an entrée and dessert. Plus, dinner guests also receive a sack lunch to go.
Tuesday, Abby's, 4804 Tieton Drive, is donating 30 percent of money taken in between 4 and 10 p.m. to "Friday Night Live." Proceeds will be used to buy food and supplies for the program.
Volunteers are still needed to prepare and serve the meals. So are donations.
For more information, call New Hope Community Church of the Nazarene at 509-452-2673.
Fresh food coming for needy
A 24-foot-long refrigerated truck -- loaded with up to 10,000 pounds of produce -- will roll into Yakima on Tuesday to deliver fresh food to those in need.
This will be the third time this year that Grace Lutheran Church has hosted the food truck and "farmers market" that will be set up to distribute the produce from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The goal is to get produce to underserved communities in a timely manner. Proof of income is not required.
This time, the food distribution event is sponsored by Northwest Farm Credit Services. Volunteers from Northwest Farm Credit Services -- as well as staff and volunteers from Grace Lutheran Church and School -- will assist in distributing the produce. Students from the school will be helping to assemble the food bags.
The event will take place at the church, 1207 S. Seventh Ave. Call the church at 509-457-6611 for more information.
