UNION GAP -- A failed tire caused a crash Friday morning involving two semi trucks and a motorcycle, sending the motorcycle rider to the hospital.
Daniel Reich, 27, of Granger, was taken to Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center for his injuries. He was treated and released.
The crash happened about 6:30 a.m. when a tire on a 2002 International tractor came off its rim as driver Johnny Harris, 62, of Zillah headed west on Interstate 82 near milepost 36. His truck hit the guardrail, then veered across the median and into one of the eastbound lanes, the Washington State Patrol reported.
Harris was not injured but his semi was totaled, troopers said. However, gravel scattered by his accident onto the westbound lane caused Reich to lose control of his 2007 Suzuki motorcycle.
A second semi, heading east, also was struck by debris from Harris' crash. It sustained minor damage, but the driver was not hurt, troopers said.
Investigators blamed the crash on the defective tire.
