YAKIMA -- A suspect in the shooting death of an 18-year-old Sunnyside man remained jailed on a $1 million bond Friday after being arraigned in Yakima County Superior Court.

Julian Williams, 18, was charged with second-degree murder and first-degree assault in the November shooting death of 18-year-old Eric Vargas.

Police said Vargas and 17-year-old Antonio Carrasco Jr. were shot after throwing rocks and breaking the rear window of a car occupied by gang members near 13th Street and Edison Avenue in Sunnyside.

Someone got out of the car and opened fire, striking both Vargas and Carrasco, who suffered wounds to his head, back and hip, police said. Vargas later died at Sunnyside Community Hospital.

A second suspect also has been arrested in the case and is awaiting charges. Both suspects are known gang members, police said.
