YAKIMA, Wash. -- Legal permanent residents -- immigrants who hold Green Cards -- are invited to a workshop where volunteers will help them apply for U.S. citizenship.
Several immigrant rights organizations will be on hand to help with the event, scheduled for Saturday.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 212 N. Fourth St.
At the workshop, volunteer immigration attorneys and interpreters will help people fill out naturalization paperwork at no cost. They also will answer other questions about the citizenship process.
Yakima is one of four Washington cities hosting Citizenship Day this weekend. The others are Tukwila, Wenatchee and Centralia.
Saturday is the second of three dates for the workshops, which will visit a total of 11 cities. The first was Feb. 28, the third will be May 30.
Organizers hope to assist 600 people with applying for citizenship by June 30. Citizenship Days last year attracted 270 people.
It is sponsored by the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Washington New Americans and OneAmerica, as well as other immigrant advocacy organizations.
Residents should bring with them a Green Card, a list of employers and list of current and past addresses.
