YAKIMA, Wash. -- An estimated 500 to 700 people gathered in downtown Yakima for Wednesday’s anti-bailout Tax Day tea party, outdoing a similar event held Saturday.

The demonstration, organized by opponents of federal bailout money for financial institutions and President Barack Obama's stimulus spending plan, was a show of anger and solidarity, according to one of its organizers Bob West.

“The government, for the most part, is ignoring the will of the people,” West told the crowd gathered in Millenium Plaza.

More than a dozen members of the crowd spoke out, using the open microphones provided for them. They joined the event's scheduled speakers such as West in condemning the federal government’s use of public money.

“I am sick and tired of hearing the private sector blamed for this mess,” said 55-year-old Elizabeth Benefiel of Yakima.

The free market should be allowed to solve the problem without government intervention said Benefiel, who carried a sign reading: “Your mortgage is not my problem.”

Police estimated the number of people at 500 to 700 people, while organizers put it closer to 700.
