YAKIMA, WASH. -- About a decade ago, Debbie Lindsay added spices to already-baked pretzels in hopes of improving the flavor.

Today, Lindsay owns It's All About The Pretzels, a successful business based on the pretzels she flavored all those years ago.

Her pretzels will be profiled on national television today when the Rachael Ray Show features them for its "Snack of the Day" segment. The show's studio audience will also receive a bag of pretzels from It's All About the Pretzels.

The Rachael Ray Show is on at 3 p.m. on KAPP-TV, the ABC affiliate.

"You could not pay for this kind of advertising," Lindsay said.

This isn't the show's first foray in Central Washington. The program has featured products from Prosser-based Chukar Cherries as its "Snack of the Day" in the past.

Lindsay was contacted by the segment coordinator in September, and she sent a sample of her pretzels. At the end of March, Lindsay was notified that the pretzels would be featured on the show.

It's quite a sea change for Lindsay, who initially shared her pretzels with only friends and family.

That began to change about four years ago when she offered the pretzels during wine tasting at Masset Winery in Wapato, which is owned by her son-in-law and daughter, Greg and Michaela Masset.

The pretzels became popular with the winery's visitors, who would often ask where they could buy them.

After a year of offering the pretzels at Masset, Lindsay decided to quit her full-time job as a unit coordinator at Cornerstone Medical Clinic in Yakima and developed It's All About the Pretzels.

She runs the business out of her Yakima home, but rents out the kitchen at Le Chateau, the former YWCA building, in downtown Yakima to make the snacks.

In 2008, the business generated about $25,000 in sales, Lindsay said.

To make the pretzels, Lindsay buys prebaked pretzels, covers them with her mix of seasonings and bakes them again.

Most of her business comes from distributing the product to retailers throughout the state, including wineries and boutique shops. She also sells the pretzels on her Web site, www.pretzellady.com.

Most of the pretzels are sold in 12-ounce packages for a retail price of $6.50. She also sells a 6-ounce package wholesale for $2.50 for mostly corporate clients and gift basket companies.

Lindsay hopes to eventually sell the pretzels nationwide, though she does not intend to sell them to mass retailers such as Wal-Mart.

Lindsay is confident that the product's appearance on the Rachael Ray Show will help her toward that goal.

"I would like to see it in every little boutique everywhere," she said.
