County to conclude final A Street buildings review

Yakima Herald-Republic

YAKIMA -- Yakima County expects to finish its environmental review of the planned "A Street buildings" demolition Wednesday.

Tearing down the century-old block of storefronts has been in the county plans since 2007, when it was recommended by a county facilities task force.

Completing the State Environmental Policy Act review of the demolition is among the final steps.

Unless county SEPA official Steve Erickson determines there are reasons to delay the demolition, the completed review is the last step before the city issues a demolition permit.

Local historic preservationists have argued that the county-owned buildings at the corner of Second and A streets are valuable to the community, but county commissioners believe the county has exhausted its redevelopment options.

In January, the county approved a $125,000 demolition contract with Russell Crane Service.
