TOPPENISH, Wash. -- A woman is in a Seattle hospital and a man is in the Yakima County jail for investigation of vehicular assault following an accident Wednesday night at Branch Road and U.S. Highway 97.
The Washington State Patrol said drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident, according to a patrol accident memorandum issued late Wednesday.
The woman, identified as Brandon Butler, 31, of Yakima was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle following the 6:50 p.m. crash. She is in intensive care in serious condition, the hospital said this morning.
The man in custody is identified as Gary Peters, 36, of Yakima. According to a county jail log, Peters was booked about 10 p.m. Wednesday.
A passenger in Peters’ 1990 Ford Thunderbird, Raymond Tallmen, 36, of Yakima, was not injured.
According to the accident memo, Peters was driving west on Branch Road when he failed to stop at the intersection of Branch and Highway 97. His car collided with a 1991 Mazda driven by Butler, which was going south on Highway 97.
Both vehicles were destroyed.
