Fajardo gets 31 points; Grandview tops Selah

SELAH -- In the panting aftermath of a game absolutely representative of this year's CWAC boys basketball campaign -- that is, both unpredictable and down to the wire -- Rogi Fajardo had both an observation and a question.

"That did get exciting. It was intense," Grandview's senior standout said the Greyhounds held on for a 68-66 victory over Selah in Carl Kellman gym.

Then came the question, which came in response to another one: What was Fajardo's previous season high for points, because his Friday night total was a quite impressive 31.

"Thirty-one? Really?" Fajardo said. "Wow. I had no idea. I would have thought maybe 20. But it was a team effort, though. Oh my gosh, that game was too close."

That it was so close was fairly remarkable, especially considering that the Greyhounds (4-3 CWAC, 4-4 overall) led 34-23 early in the second half and proceeded to a torrid 14-for-22 from the field the rest of the way. And yet that lead just kept getting smaller and smaller, as the Vikings played inspired basketball, sank four 3-pointers over a seven-minute span and took the ball to the hole time after time.

"We had a stretch where we played really hard," Selah assistant coach Ryan Steltz said. "We could have folded our tents, but the kids fought and gave us a chance to win it at the end. That's all you can ask."

The Vikings (2-5, 3-6) got a huge game out of Brett Dodeward, who scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half to fuel the comeback, and a big night from Drew Washut, who augmented his team-high 18 points with seven assists -- six of them coming in the second half.

A Washut basket off a Nick Longmire assist tied the game at 62-62 with 1:46 remaining, capping a 17-7 Selah run over an absolutely frantic 2:17 stretch. But Joseph Babcock put Grandview back in front and, following a Viking offensive foul, Fajardo added an exclamation point to his night's work. He knifed through the lane and, with the bodies and outstretched arms of two defenders in his path, somehow managed to twist through them, not charge and put the ball in the basket.

"Rogi's a very tough player. He makes it hard to defend," Steltz said of Fajardo, who finished with 12-for-21 shooting, a team-high eight rebounds and four steals.

Fajardo had plenty of help, with Eric Rodriguez scoring 13 points, Chris Hernandez adding 10 and Adrian Reyes dishing out five assists.

Ricky Escalera added 10 points for Selah, whose comeback drew raves from Grandview coach Roy Garcia.

"It's a testament to Selah," he said. "This was a tough game for 32 minutes. A turnover here, a turnover there and Selah wins this basketball game.

"We've got to use this game as a stepping stone and a learning tool. We need to learn how to win these close ones."

On that criteria, the Greyhounds are one for their last one.
