12/16/08 Death Notices


Harold Turnley

Harold Turnley, 79, of Desert Aire died Saturday at his home.

He was born in Yakima. He worked for the State of Washington at the Employment Security office and later with the Department of Transportation, retiring in 1985. He moved to Desert Aire from Yakima in 1990.

Survivors include his wife, Bertie (McGrath) Turnley of Desert Aire; one son, Lester Turnley of Yakima; three daughters, Sheryl Boseck of Moxee, Caryl Griffin of Naches and Gerri Finley of Selah; five stepsons, Kenneth John of Marysville, Wash., Douglas John and Steve John, both of Ellensburg, Tim McGrath of Clearwater, Fla., and Dennis John of Snohomish, Wash.; three brothers, Forrest of Federal Way, Wash., Richard of Tacoma and Dale of Riverside, Calif.; one sister, Dorothy Mudd of Kent, Wash.; 22 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Yakima Chapel of Valley Hills Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel with burial to follow at Terrace Heights Memorial Park.


Israel Mendoza

Israel Mendoza, 64, of Sunnyside died Saturday.

He was born in Barranca Del Limoncito, Michoacan, Mexico. He worked as a farm laborer throughout the Valley.

Survivors include his wife, Carmen Mendoza; seven children, Pedro Mendoza, Raquel Martinez, Hector Mendoza, Margarita Mendoza, Jesus Mendoza, Rito Mendoza and Marisol Mendoza; nine sisters, Eva, Anita, Zenida, Amelia, Socorro, Rosalia, Gloria, Maricela and Theresa; four brothers, Adan, Simon, Ramon and Javier; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Viewing and visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday with recitation of the rosary at 6 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside with burial to follow at the Lower Valley Memorial Gardens.

 

Andrew 'Andy' Falen

Andrew "Andy" Falen, 86, lifelong Yakima Valley resident died Monday.

He was born in Yakima. He was a farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Charlene Falen of Selah; three daughters, Julie Valdez of Yakima, Jeannie Gavins of Long Beach, Wash., and Anne Noble of Gainesville, Fla.; one son, Dan Falen of Yakima; one sister, Ella Lundberg of Naches; and five grandchildren.

Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Keith and Keith Terrace Heights Chapel.

 

Gertrude Erickson

Gertrude Erickson, 91, of Toppenish died Monday.

She was born in Scobey, Mont. She was a homemaker and also worked for Del Monte in Toppenish.

Survivors include one son, Larry Erickson of California; seven daughters, Donna McCutcheon of Silverdale, Wash., Sandra McKee and Nancy Martin, both of Kennewick, Barbara Green of Portland, Diane Cooper of Milwaukie, Ore., Mary Lou Lindbloom of Toppenish and Leona Williams of Vancouver, Wash.; one brother, Harold L. Stroud of Kenai, Alaska; 20 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with burial to follow at the Zillah Cemetery.

 

Leslie Ray Ashlock

Leslie Ray Ashlock, 80, of Toppenish died Sunday in Yakima.

He was born in Laverne, Okla. He was a longtime Toppenish resident and worked as a mechanic and welder.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ashlock of Toppenish; one son, Larry Ashlock of Richland; two daughters, Kathy Cullen and Betty Schilperoort, both of Outlook; three brothers, George Ashlock and Vernon Ashlock, both of Toppenish, and Delbert Ashlock of Rapid City, S.D.; one sister, Delma Wilcox of San Jose, Calif.; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with burial to follow at the Zillah Cemetery.

 

Florence I. Klebaum

Florence I. Klebaum, 89, of Yakmia died Thursday at Summitview Health Care Center.

Mrs. Klebaum was born in Yakima County and worked on the family farm. She also worked as a real estate agent and broker.

Survivors include two sons, Noel Klebaum of Ventura, Calif., and Alan Klebaum of Wapato; two daughters, Julia Thornton of Sweet Home, Ore., and Linda Chaplin of Pullman, Wash.; a brother George Gans of Vernonia, Ore.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be at Reservation Community Memorial Park in Wapato. A memorial service will be in late January at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Yakima.

Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home in Yakima is in charge of arrangements.

 

Ethel DeGood

Ethel DeGood, 100, of Prosser died Friday.

She was born in Horse Heaven Hills, Prosser. She was raised in Prosser and was the first Miss Prosser in 1929. She lived in Wenatchee, Coulee City and Yakima, then returned to Prosser in 1970.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Lenore Donaldson of Prosser; one nephew, Michael Peterson of Packwood, Wash.; and two nieces, Bonnie Shannon of Stites, Idaho, and Janet Stinchfield of Condon, Ore.

Memorial service and inurnment will be at a later date.

Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory, Sunnyside is in charge of the arrangements.

 

Bertha 'Bert' Rozella Nelson

Bertha "Bert" Rozella Nelson, 94, of Yakima died Monday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Picabo, Idaho. She was co-owner of a meat processing business until her retirement.

Survivors include two daughters, Bette Cooney of Yakima and Deanna Ziurys of Germany; one sister, Beulah Schleicher of Florida; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A private gathering for friends and family will be at a later date.

Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

 

Jerry E. Garrison

Jerry E. Garrison, 75, of Yakima died Friday at Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center.

He was born in Grandview, earned a degree in education from Central Washington State College in 1955 and began his teaching career at Moxee Elementary School before teaching at East Valley High School. He also coached golf, track and field, and football.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Garrison of Yakima; four sons, Mike Garrison of San Diego, Craig Garrison and Steve Garrison, both of Yakima, and Dale Garrison of Olympia; two brothers, Roger and Tom Garrison, both of Sunnyside; three sisters, Mary Alice Charvet of Sunnyside, Rita Ann Dorner of Buckley, Wash., and Susan Shnieder of Portland; and seven grandchildren.

A vigil will be at 6 p.m. today at Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Holy Family Catholic Church. A private burial for family will be at Terrace Heights Memorial Park.

 

Mary Lee Andy

Mary Lee Andy, 39, of Toppenish was found Sunday near Toppenish.

She was born in Tacoma.

Survivors include her companion, David Olivas of Toppenish; one daughter, Josephine Andy of White Swan; parents, Eugene Andy Sr. of Toppenish and Cheryl Watlamet Scott of Portland; two brothers, Joseph Watlamet of Wapato and Eugene Andy Jr. of Yakima; and three sisters, Bernadine Mardel of Toppenish, and Rose M. Scott and Charlee A. Scott, both of Portland.

Dressing service will be at 10 a.m. today at Colonial Funeral Home in Toppenish. Overnight services will be at the Independent Shaker Church in White Swan. Morning services will begin at 9 Wednesday at the church with the procession to Toppenish Creek Cemetery at 10 a.m.
