Agreement reached on East Valley teachers' contract

East Valley School District teachers and administrators have reached consensus on a proposal for a teachers' contract.

Administrators and representatives of the East Valley Education Association reached a tentative agreement on the proposed contract Wednesday.

The association's full membership will vote on the offer Dec. 11.

"We're pretty confident that the members will support it," predicted teacher Michael Duerre, association co-president.

Duerre said that the two bargaining sides agreed not to divulge details of the contract before the ratification vote. He did note, however, that the tentative agreement centers around three main issues -- teacher optional work hours, personal leave and class size.

Previously mentioned as additional concerns were teacher workload and insurance.

The previous contract expired in August.

Negotiations between district administrators and the teachers association began in May. In June, the district requested a mediator be called in for the talks, which continued through the summer.

In November, more than 80 people attended a school board meeting to ask why district teachers were still working without a contract.

A phone call Wednesday evening seeking comment from Superintendent John Schieche was not immediately returned.

The district includes five schools, 170 teachers and more than 2,700 students.
