Vets deserve better

To the editor -- I am upset about care and treatment of our veterans. Hundreds of thousands of our men and women go for care at Veterans Administration clinics. But even when a vet needs to be seen for more than one health issue, appointments are made for one thing at a time, when two to three are needed! Waiting time is so long, it is sad. Whoever is in charge must deal with the overly long waiting time to be seen and the lack of followup afterward.

We should not have such substandard care. More and more vets are coming back, so it will only get worse. Our vets are treated like second-rate citizens. We need to address this, as it is a huge issue. Does anyone care?

Good things in schools

To the editor -- I have been substituting in the Yakima School District, Yakama Nation Tribal School and the Mt. Adams School District and I see many good things happening in the classrooms. Parents and community need to give a big thank you for the compassion of employees in your district areas.

Today I witnessed families join their children for a special Thanksgiving lunch, and it was good!

It is so nice to see families meet the teachers and staff and spend some time in the buildings with their children. Grandparents too!

Remember to donate new or used coats, gloves or scarves to school children. I see many without coats and necessities.

Courthouse work

To the editor -- The last couple of days, our local news outlets have reported the possible building of a new Yakima County courthouse. I have not made my mind up on that issue. What makes me angry is the fact they are going to hire a firm out of Seattle to draw up the plans and construction. Why not use local people for both? It may cost less and definitely help our unemployment of qualified people.

On editor's departure

To the editor -- It is important for us as a community to be thankful for Sarah Jenkins' many years of service to the Yakima Herald-Republic and to all of us who read it or have been affected by her thoughtful words. Whether we always agree with her or not, we must be impressed with her responsiveness, her sense of compassion and her dedication to doing the necessary research to report accurately. We wish her the very best in her new pursuits.

CEO compensation

To the editor -- We have people making millions per year in salary while most are making $50,000 per year or $1 million over 20 years. Does anyone see the lunacy of this? CEOs should be putting their money back into their companies to cover hard times.

Why are some CEOs guaranteed millions in separation packages, leaving thousands of employees without any parachutes? This is insane.

Election spending

To the editor -- It appears from information from the Federal Election Commission I found on TGDaily (http://www.tgdaily.com/content/blogcategory/0/167/), that Sen. Barack Obama received one vote for each $8.94 spent and Sen. John McCain received one vote for each $5.19 spent. Apparently Sen. Obama had fewer restrictions on receiving funds as he decided not to receive federal funds. The $280,000,000 difference in spending had a huge impact on the marketing of Sen. McCain.

'Building Better Lives'

To the editor -- I read with great interest the Nov. 17 front page article, "Building Better Lives," about Jude and Robert Bonser. This couple's commitment to help others touched my heart. There is so much we can learn from those who are living in recovery. Thank you for sharing their story.
