Hazmat team responds to leaking chemical container

YAKIMA -- Yakima firefighters this afternoon are preparing to safely dispose of a leaking chemical container at the storage yard of a Fair Avenue apartment complex.

The operation has closed about a block of Chestnut Avenue west of Fair Avenue.

Officials say there is no need for evacuation. Residents of the adjoining apartments, operated by the Yakima Housing Authority, have been asked to stay inside, police said.

Somebody dropped the small canister off at another housing authority location. Workers then brought it to the Chestnut storage yard. When they noticed that the canister was leaking, they called the state Department of Ecology to determine what to do, said Battalion Chief Mitch Cole of the Yakima Fire Department.

The fire department’s hazardous-materials team was called out. Team members will cap the canister, then arrange for its disposal.

Cole said at 1:30 p.m. he expected the operation to be done within one to two hours.

The chemical in the canister is believed to be hydrogen sulfide, which is used in pesticides.
