Diwali celebration is tonight
Yakima's Hindu and Sikh communities are throwing a Diwali celebration tonight.
Diwali, or India's "festival of lights," is a holiday with varying significance across the country. It's marked by lighting small oil lamps, exchanging sweets and displaying a lot of fireworks. For Hindus, it observes a spiritual triumph of good over evil.
Although there won't be any fireworks at the local Diwali celebration, there will be plenty of food (about 40 different items), a Bollywood-style DJ from Seattle, a professional bhangra music group, local performance groups and activities for kids.
The celebration runs from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Harman Center at Gailleon Park, 101 N. 65th Ave.
Tickets, which include an all-you-can-eat buffet, cost $40 for adults and $20 for ages 6 to 12. To make a reservation, call Jessi Randhawa at 910-5129 or Paul Randhawa at 910-4577.

The cathedral is holding several programs to celebrate its patron saint, including this dramatic presentation, which takes place at the church, 15 S. 12th Ave. A reception will follow in the Assembly Place, located adjacent to the cathedral.

Harrah church keeping its pastor
It's official: Jerral Campfield is the senior pastor at the Harrah Assembly of God Church -- indefinitely.
The Snoqualmie-based Northwest Ministry Network of the Assemblies of God recently gave Campfield the good news. The 72-year-old minister had been serving in that role since the end of June, but until recently it was an interim position.
When he learned the network was planning to close the small church, he urged church officials to rethink the plan.
The church is at 3681 Harrah Road. For more information, call 848-2600.
