Hats off to our neighbors to the north.
On Sperling’s “Most Secure U.S. Places to Live” list, Wenatchee ranks 11th. The list was released last week.
Yakima did not make the rankings, nor did any other city in Central Washington.
The rankings are based on crime statistics, extreme weather, risk of natural disaster, environmental hazards, terrorism threats, air quality, life expectancy and job loss. The study looked at 379 communities, classifying them as large metropolitan areas, mid-size cities and small towns.
Wenatchee’s ranking is in the small-town category — less than 150,000 residents. Corvallis, Ore., topped the small-town list. Olympia came in No. 1 in the mid-size cities category. Seattle ranked 17th among large metro areas.
Wenatchee has appeared on several such lists in the last two years. In March, Forbes.com ranked the area as the 43rd best small community in the country for business and careers.
