SUNNYSIDE -- Two Lower Valley women were injured early Monday when their car struck a semi-tractor and trailer that was attempting a U-turn on Interstate 82, two miles west of Sunnyside, the Washington State Patrol said.
A memo released by the patrol said the midnight accident injured Mary Galaviz, 77, and Delores Smasne, 58, both of Grandview. They were taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital.
Smasne was transferred to Harborview Medical Center for further treatment, the hospital said, while Galaviz was treated and released.
According to the accident report, Ruperto Gomez, 39, of Alliance, Neb., was attempting a U-turn in his 1999 Kenworth using a state Department of Transportation crossing. Gomez was not injured.
The 1992 Buick driven by Galaviz was passing the semi-tractor at the time. The Kenworth struck the passenger car, which was destroyed in the accident.
Troopers said the illegal U-turn caused the accident.
