Water main leak causes Rite-Aid to close for day

YAKIMA — A Summitview Avenue water main outside a Rite-Aid store ruptured twice Monday, leaving unclear whether the west Yakima store would reopen today, officials said.

The second break was reported shortly before 9 p.m., just a few feet from the first one in the 5600 block of Summitview Avenue.

Crews had just finished cleaning up after the first spot failed about 1 p.m., said Battalion Chief Mitch Cole of the Yakima Fire Department.

Firefighters were checking nearby homes for flood damage after representatives from the Nob Hill Water Association shut off water mains in the area.

Cole said, on the first break, Nob Hill managers estimated that between 25,000 and 30,000 gallons of water was lost. The domestic water system was not affected.

A Rite-Aid public affairs representative could not be reached Monday afternoon for more information on any damage.
