Quintet kicks off community concerts

SUNNYSIDE -- The Thüringer Salonquintett, a chamber music ensemble, will visit here next week as the first of five performances for Lower Valley Community Concerts.

Community Concerts is a nationwide nonprofit that brings performers to small communities. Many fans purchase season-long memberships. All Lower Valley shows are at the Sunnyside High School auditorium.

The Thüringer Salonquintett will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

The quintet is comprised of two violins, cello, double bass and piano. It includes both European and American performers.

Cost for season tickets to all five shows is $50 for adults, $15 for students and $105 for a family of four.

Single-performance admission is available at the door for $30.

Banquet, auction fundraiser is tonight

GRANDVIEW -- Tonight is the banquet and auction for the Yakima Valley Fair and Rodeo Foundation.

The group is holding the event to raise money for the fair and rodeo, held every August in Grandview.

Activities will include musical performances by the cast of "Beauty and the Beast" and wine tasting.

It will be held at The Vineyard, corner of Second Avenue and Division Street.

First aid, CPR training is Oct. 16

GRANDVIEW -- Merchants of the Lower Valley are invited to a first aid and CPR workshop on Oct. 16.

The class will cover standards and guidelines certified by the American Heart Association and state Labor and Industries.

Each participant will receive a card valid for two years.

Hours are 1-5 p.m. at the Yakima Valley Community College Grandview campus.

Cost is $15 for members of the Prosser, Grandview or Sunnyside chambers of commerce, $65 for the general public.

School retirees will meet Tuesday

GRANDVIEW -- The Lower Yakima Valley Unit of the Washington State School Retirees Association will meet Tuesday at The Flour Shop Café, 810 W. Second St.

Business meeting and lunch will start at 11 a.m.

The program will be Pete and Alice Shaw discussing their recent trip to the Olympics to watch their granddaughter Hope Solo and the U.S. women's soccer team win the gold medal.

Flu shots available Monday in Prosser

PROSSER -- Valley Vista Medical Group will administer flu shots from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.

Cost is $20. All are welcome without an appointment.

It will be the first of two flu vaccination clinics for adults and children.

Valley Vista is located at 820 Memorial Street, Ste. 1.

It's your last chance to see 'Beauty'

PROSSER -- Over the Hill Theatricals has one more weekend of "Beauty and the Beast."

Shows are 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Sunnyside High School auditorium.

Barbara Davis and Terry Langley lead the cast.

Tickets cost $10 each and are available at the door.

 

Band competition fundraiser is Oct. 18

GRANDVIEW -- Supporters of Grandview High School music programs will hold a band competition Oct. 18 to raise money.

Called "Rocktober: Battle of the Bands," the contest will run 3:30-8 p.m. at the high school stadium, 1601 W. Fifth Street.

Participating bands are Aaron, Animus, On-Edge, Tara Collins and the Pepe Bucket Band.

Cost for admission is $3 for students and $5 for adults.

Proceeds will help purchase new uniforms for the Grandview High School band.

Help spruce up Prosser park Saturday

PROSSER -- Volunteers here will meet Saturday to spruce up and fix up the community playground in City Park.

They want more help.

Organizers are calling for volunteers to help paint, repair and perform general maintenance on the playground, located across Seventh Street from Prosser High School.

The playground was built in 2000 by volunteers under the direction of a hired engineer. Volunteers maintain it.

To help, meet at 8:30 a.m. with work gloves.
