A new clothing store will open Tuesday at the former Simon-Edwards Gallery space.
Kristie Burrill, a Yakima native, recently returned to the area to open Kristie Burrill's Fine Clothing for Women, which will sell women's clothing and a variety of vintage jewelry and buttons, at the corner of 32nd and Summitview avenues, next to The Shopkeeper.
Burrill moved to Seattle 38 years ago to study fashion at the University of Washington. While in school, she was hired as an associate costume designer for the Seattle Opera. After working there for three years, she ran a shop in Capitol Hill for more than 20 years offering custom clothing design and alterations.
She recently designed her own fashion line, but said it was more difficult to promote the line and run a retail store in Seattle. While visiting in Yakima, she visited Denyses' Shoe Boutique, which relocated to the Shopkeeper building earlier this year. That's when she heard the gallery space was for rent.
"The rent is so much more reasonable here," she said.
The gallery, now named Simon Gallery, just opened at its new downtown location at the Great Western building.
