The Yakima Air Terminal board hopes to find a new manager by Jan. 1.

Board members met Friday to discuss the qualifications they are looking for in a new manager.

Amber Hanson, a board member who is co-chairing the search process, said the board wants someone with solid marketing and business management skills who can help attract new tenants. The individual is also expected to aid in airport development.

The new manager should also "articulate how valuable this airport is to the Yakima area and how important it is to businesses looking to expand or relocate to Yakima," Hanson said.

Board member Jim Adams said the hiring process gives the board the opportunity to chart the future of the facility, which is co-owned by Yakima County and the city of Yakima.

This new manager will need to be able to reach out to community members and government officials and delegate day-to-day tasks to staff members.

"We're going from being insular to being an economic engine for the county and the city," he said.

According to a draft of the job description, the airport manager salary is $75,000 to $95,000 plus benefits. The application requirements include a resume, a county employment application form and a supplemental questionnaire.

Buck Taylor resigned from the position last month after holding the position for nearly four years. Board members cited a difference in management philosophies as the reason for the departure. Jerry Kilpatrick, the airport's long-time assistant manager, is serving as interim manager.
