A 19-year-old man who was the driver in a shooting that injured two Sunnyside teenagers was sentenced Wednesday to seven months in jail.
David Guillen had earlier pleaded guilty to second-degree assault, a reduction from his original charge of two counts of first-degree assault and one count of illegal firearms possession.
Guillen had already been in custody for more time than he was ordered to serve.
Bob Northcott, a special deputy prosecutor who handled the case, said he believed Guillen did not know his co-defendant was going to shoot at the pair of victims. One of the boys still has a bullet lodged in his back.
Jorge Saenz, who was found guilty last month of first-degree assault, had earlier argued with the victims at the Sunnyside Wal-Mart because of their ties to a rival gang.
Saenz awaits sentencing as Northcott seeks docu-mentation to support his belief that Saenz should be sentenced to life in prison as a three-strikes offender.
He has two prior convictions for assault, although defense counsel has argued it should not count as a strike because he was a juvenile. Northcott said Saenz was convicted in adult court regardless of his age.
This has got to be a joke for a sentence! Where are the public canings? How many people have to be killed before we demand that the punishment actually fit the crime?
