Penny-pinching workshop starts soon

GOLDENDALE — The Goldendale Community Library will hold a workshop series about penny-pinching starting this weekend.

The free class, called “Refunding: Using Coupons, Rebates and Freebies to Stretch Your Home Dollar” will run 10-11:30 a.m. every Saturday until Oct. 18.

Grandview Harvest Ball planned Friday

GRANDVIEW — The Grandview senior center will hold a Harvest Ball on Friday.

The semi-formal dance is open to area residents 55 and older. Couples and singles are invited.

Music will begin at 7 p.m. Cost is $5 per person.

‘Beauty, Beast’ starts this weekend

SUNNYSIDE — Over the Hill Theatricals will perform five showings of “Beauty and the Beast” starting this weekend.

The Lower Valley troupe puts on plays and musicals with cast members who are more than 45 years old.

Barbara Davis and Terry Langley will lead the cast as Belle and the Beast.

Evening performances will be at 7 p.m. Saturday and Oct. 10. Afternoon matinees will 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11 and Oct. 12.

All shows will be at Sunnyside High School.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door, Sixth Street Gallery in Prosser, Safeway in Grandview and the Daily Sun News in Sunnyside.


Relay for Life kickoff next week

PROSSER — The Lower Valley Relay for Life participants will hold an annual kick-off celebration Wednesday.

Anyone who has been on a team or is interested in starting a team is invited.

The kick-off will be at 7 p.m. at the Benton County PUD building on Wamba Road.

Participants of the annual Relay for Life raise money all year in preparation for the walkathon, scheduled for mid-May in Grandview.

Fair and rodeo fundraiser Oct. 9

GRANDVIEW — Supporters of the Yakima Valley Fair and Rodeo will hold a banquet and silent auction at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Flour Shop, 810 W. Second St.

Prime rib and salmon are on the menu, while Coyote Canyon Winery will provide wine tasting and members of Over the Hill Senior Theatricals will perform music from their recent production of “Beauty and the Beast.”

Silent auctions will feature holiday gift baskets.

Cost is $50. Proceeds will go to the Yakima Valley Fair and Rodeo Foundation, a group formed to financially help the fair and rodeo, held in August every year. Declining attendance and dwindling support from the state has left the event struggling for money.

Help needed for playground repairs

PROSSER — Volunteers are needed to help make winter repairs to the Prosser Community Playground in City Park.

Workers will meet 8:30 a.m. Oct. 11 to help paint, repair, landscape and perform general maintenance to the playground. The playground was built by volunteers and funded by community donations in 2000.

 

First-aid, CPR workshop set for Oct. 16

GRANDVIEW — Yakima Valley Community College and Lower Valley Chambers of Commerce will hold a first-aid and CPR workshop Oct. 16.

The class will cover techniques advocated by the American Heart Association and accepted under state and federal workplace guidelines. Each participant will receive a certification card valid for two years.

The cost is $15 for Chamber members in Prosser, Grandview and Sunnyside and $65 for the general public.

Hours are 1-5 p.m. at the college campus in Grandview.

Halloween carnival volunteers needed

GRANDVIEW — Volunteers are needed to help put on a Halloween street carnival and haunted house in downtown Grandview.

Every year, Grandview service groups put on a street festival near Halloween. This year it will be 5:30-10 p.m. Oct. 24-25 on Division Street between Second Avenue and Wine Country Road.

Proceeds go to the Grandview community float, which is entered in parades throughout the state.

Organizers want help running game tables and building the haunted house, as well as donations of wrapped candy. They can be dropped off at the Grandview Chamber of Commerce. Last year, 1,200 people went through the downtown haunted house.
