Prosser streets to get upgrade
PROSSER -- Starting Monday, road construction crews will begin fixing downtown streets here.
A&B Asphalt employees and equipment will begin grinding and overlaying Sixth Street between the railroad tracks to Meade Avenue, adding new asphalt, curb, gutters, sidewalks and pavement markings to one of Prosser's busiest roads. The work will repair portions of Meade and Bennett avenues.
Work is tentatively scheduled to run from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Sept. 15 and during the day on Sundays. The road will close during those times.
The work is expected to cost $234,000.
Rural grants fund Prosser projects
PROSSER -- This community has received two federal grants to help pay for street improvements and firefighting equipment repairs.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development program gave the city of Prosser grants and loans totaling $83,000 to be used for street and water line improvements to the Village Park Subdivision. The neighborhood, on the corner of Old Inland Empire Highway and Wamba Road, will receive new sidewalks, curbs and water meters, as well as reconstructed water lines.
Meanwhile, the program also gave a grant and loan package worth $66,000 to Prosser Fire District No. 3 to repair the department's aerial ladder truck.
Grandview stumps for stompers
GRANDVIEW -- This city is gearing up for the annual Great Grandview Grape Stomp on Sept. 13.
The Grape Stomp involves teams of three stomping juice from a barrel of grapes in a one-minute race.
It's scheduled from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Yakima Valley Community College Grandview campus' workforce education center.
It will be followed by the Grape to Glass Gala and Scholarship fundraiser, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Tickets to that are $30. It features an auction.
