A local fruit company has been fined $81,193 by the federal Environmental Protection Agency for violating restrictions on the use of anhydrous ammonia.
The EPA in a news release said Cascade View Fruit and Cold Storage was fined for ammonia violations involving the company's warehouse at 1100 East Pomona Road in the Selah area.
The EPA said a records check last year revealed the warehouse had exceeded the ammonia threshold in November 2004 without having a risk management plan in place as required by federal law.
Such plans are designed to minimize the risk to the public from an off-site release of anhydrous ammonia, a potentially deadly refrigerant that is widely used in the fruit-storage industry.
The problem has since been corrected, the EPA said.
Cascade View spokesman J. Scott Carpenter acknowledged the error but said the company had been working all along with local officials on a risk management plan.
"We recognize the authority of the EPA and are looking forward to putting this unfortunate situation behind us," he said.
