Guilty Pleasures Party-- A Prophet for a party

When it came to planning tonight's second annual Guilty Pleasures Party, the musical entertainment was left up to the good taste of Yakima Sports Center booking agent Dan Craig.

And when he asked if it was OK to book Chuck Prophet, I said, "Sure."

Not because I knew about Prophet's run with the great '80s L.A. alt-country/roots-punk band Green on Red, who counted X and The Blasters among its fans.

Or because I was blown-away by Prophet's incredible songwriting and hunky voice, or impressed by his collaborations with the likes of Warren Zevon and Cake.

Or that I was completely in love with the fact that he and a bunch of folks, after getting accidentally locked in a studio (as the legend goes), re-recorded, in its entirety, Waylon Jennings' acclaimed album "Dreaming My Dreams With You."

In truth, I had no idea who Prophet was.

Luckily, Kevin Henriquez, a longtime CD slinger and manager at Off the Record, was nice enough to bring me up to speed on what a freakin' big deal Prophet is, filling me in on his Green on Red days and later solo stuff.

And then there's Adam Mack.

The Yakima-bred drummer, who's playing tonight with opening singer-songwriters Bryn Loosley and Colin Spring, isn't even trying to hide his excitement about sharing the same stage as Prophet.

"The music's just so cool. He's just cool," says Mack, who first saw Prophet about four years ago on the public television concert series "Austin City Limits." "What ever's cool, that's what he is."

And to be in the same place, on the same stage as Prophet, well, Mack almost doesn't even want to play.

"I almost want to give him more time," he says. "I want him to play everything."

But Mack will be playing. Keeping in the tradition of last year's Guilty Pleasures Party, the bands are encouraged to play a few (or an entire set) of their own musical guilty pleasures, i.e., indulgent cover tunes, which, I'm told, will include some Bob Seger and a Cars/Rick Springfield medley.

And, hopefully, if Prophet is feelin' it, some Waylon.
