Mixed Martial Arts -- Chicagoan stays unbeaten, wins ground war with Guerin

Yakima Herald-Republic

TOPPENISH -- Rich Guerin didn't want to get into a slugging match with Jordan Smith in their mixed martial arts main event Saturday night at Legends Casino.

Instead, the Yakima fighter wanted to try and get Smith on the mat, and use his wide range of skills against the undefeated fighter from Chicago.

Guerin managed to get Smith on the mat, but the younger fighter was able to get Guerin on his back and eventually scored a victory with a rear-naked choke hold at the 4-minute, 16-second mark of the opening round.

The result, which disappointed the local crowd of more than 2,000 at the casino's outdoor venue, was also the last for Guerin, 37, who announced after the fight that he was retiring, according to promoter Patrick Ortiz.

Smith improved to 9-0 with his victory.

In the co-main event, Sally Krumdiak defeated Valerie Coolbaugh with an arm bar submission at 2:40 of the first round.

In other fights on the main card, Sterling Ford defeated Matt Coble with a rear-naked choke at 1:02 of the first round, and Alex Zuniga scored a technical knockout of Zack Skinner at 55 seconds of the third round.

Overall, Ortiz said the first mixed martial arts card at Legends was a crowd-pleasing 10-fight card, and promised more such programs there in the future.
