Glen Blomgren resigned Monday as manager of Bob McLaughlin's campaign for the state House.

Blomgren left the campaign because of what he considered negative publicity from a Monday front page story in the Yakima Herald-Republic outlining the financial woes of the Christa McAuliffe Academy, an Internet-based school he founded but no longer owns.

"He said, 'I don't want to detract from your campaign. You can win this,'" McLaughlin said in a telephone interview Monday evening. Blomgren did not immediately respond to a telephone message seeking comment.

A former state legislative candidate himself, Blomgren also is the Yakima County chairman of Attorney General Rob McKenna's re-election campaign.

McLaughlin is vying against four other Republicans and one Democrat for the 14th District legislative seat soon to be vacated by retiring Rep. Mary Skinner, R-Yakima.

The other Republicans are Yakima City Councilman Norm Johnson, former Union Gap Mayor Aubrey Reeves, Yakima attorney Al Schweppe and Scott Hess, who works for the National Federation of Independent Business. The Democrat is Vickie Ybarra, president of the Yakima school board and director of planning and development for the Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic.
