Yakima again can claim local brewery
YAKIMA -- The first brewery in Yakima since Yakima Brewing & Malting Co. closed nearly three years ago is now open for business.
Yakima Craft Brewing Co. released its Pale Ale at several restaurants last week.
The brewery was developed by president Jeff Winn and head brewer Chris Swedin. Winn, who recently moved to Yakima from Portland, has been home brewing for several years. Swedin brewed beer for Grant's Brewery Pub. The pair even secured a piece from Grant's glory days: a homemade copper brewing kettle.
Winn said he was drawn to Yakima's growing economy and the abundance of hops in the area.
"The fact that Yakima no longer had a brewery, I just couldn't let that stand," Winn said. "If there's one place in North America that should have a brewery, it's Yakima."
The brewery at 2920 River Road is primarily a manufacturing facility, but visitors are welcome to visit on Tuesdays and Saturdays to tour the facility and sample the beer. The beer is also available at Buhrmaster Baking Co., Yakima Sports Center, Bob's Keg & Cork, The Beer Shoppe and The Hopvine.

Ledgestone Hotel is open for business
YAKIMA -- Though the new Ledgestone Hotel just opened last week, it's already attracting business.
Many customers walked in and made reservations on the first day, said general manager Sara Olson. And she expects most of the hotel's suites will be nearly booked at the end of the month.
One key customer base for the hotel at 107 N. Fair Ave. has been those who have relocated to the area for a new job but need a place to stay while they search for a home or rental. "We're off to a great start, that's for sure," Olson said.
The suites, which come with one or two queen-size beds, start at $129 per night, according to its Web site. They include a kitchen with a full-size refrigerator and ceramic cooktops, a living room area with a flat-screen television and a separate bedroom area with another flat-screen television and one or two queen-size beds with custom-made linens.
The hotel is owned by Aspen Management, a Milton, Wash., company that also owns and operates two hotels under the Aspen Hotel brand in Soldotna and Kenai, Alaska. The Yakima facility is the first under the Ledgestone Hotel brand.
